Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Indigenous language magazines have the potential to reach and engage communities that may be less familiar with mainstream, English-language media. In Kano Municipal Local Government, where many residents speak local languages such as Hausa, magazines published in indigenous languages can serve as effective tools for promoting political awareness. By providing localized political content, such as coverage of elections, governance, and policy changes, these magazines help to bridge the information gap, especially for those in rural areas with limited access to formal education. The effectiveness of indigenous language magazines in fostering political awareness has become a subject of growing interest, with studies suggesting that they play a key role in empowering citizens and enhancing political participation (Usman & Musa, 2024). This study evaluates how effectively indigenous language magazines promote political awareness among residents of Kano Municipal.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Political participation and awareness are essential to a functioning democracy, but many citizens, particularly those in rural areas, remain disengaged due to limited access to political information in understandable formats.
